Mentos Fresh Machine
The Mentos Fresh Machine is an interactive advertisement created as part of a PR campaign for the candy. The project played on the double meaning of the word “chewing” in Korean, which is typically also used to disregard something that bothers them. Using Google speech recognition and our own customized software we developed our “stress relief machine” that prints people’s messages directly on the candy and lets them “chew the stress away…” The automated process we developed includes voice recognition, which translates the audio message to text, and the printing technique, which prints, fixes, dries, and then delivers the candy to the user. Our customized printer was based on a revamped flatbed printer, controlled by an Arduino micro-controller and a series of motors. All the additional required mechanical components were produced using a 3D printer.
